The Science of SELF describes human consciousness as developmental.
We may share the same physical world and the same human form, but we do not necessarily perceive that world, interpret our experiences or understand ourselves from the same developmental position.
We develop through degrees of Self-awareness, just as physical life develops through recognisable stages of maturity. The Map of Self is a way of locating that development.
It is not a ranking of human worth, and the levels are not rigid boxes. Everything in existence works through degrees. Within each level there are degrees of development, transitional states and movement towards the next. Some people move gradually. Some remain predominantly within one level for most of a lifetime. Some develop unevenly. Others jump stages through trauma, intense suffering, near-death or other experiences that open perception before all the capacities of the preceding stages have been integrated.
The Map is a developmental cartography, not a clinical diagnostic system.
It asks: Where are you now? What have you developed? What have you outgrown? What have you skipped? And what is trying to emerge next?
